dl

man, i used to be bummed on david lynch. when i was in college i wasn't into his movies at all. i thought it was all just weird for weird's sake, too arty.  but lately, as in the past couple years, i'm into it. way into it. partly it was about reading his book "catching the big fish" which is about his meditation practice, partly, but mostly about taking it deep and creativity and big ideas and believing in things. heavy and so so very good. you should get the audio book because he reads it and you can listen to it while you're strutting around or on a long drive.
then i started watching some of his movies again, mostly making my way through twin peaks and thinking about how much these things are about dreams. and dreams are really strange and abstracted but there's always that truth to them bubbling underneath. maybe you've always been into this dude and i'm way behind here, but i've been having a good time exploring all this stuff with new eyes and ears. also, this opening sequence just mellows me out every time. i wonder if there's some secret relaxation open mind witchery going on with these images and the music? it works.
mostly i think i love how these things work on a subliminal dream level and are also sort of ridiculous and easy to make fun of. joking and not joking. also viva la dr. jacoby.

add to cart

my soul brother sam flax has an album (cassette only!) that comes out on burger records tonight. it's limited to 250 and you really should scoop one up. sam and i are buds from the same mud and he has been a huge inspiration in my creative life since i've known him.  he is a true believer and we are all better for having him around. this album has been a long time coming and i'm truly stoked that he is sharing this thing with the world. you can order one here. and you can listen to it or download it here. i do believe he's on the road with burger for the sxsw concert series in austin, so if you're there, go see his show and give that dude a smoothie and a back rub. long live music, friendship, and sending things into the ether!

look at this old-ass flier! coconut played with us and it ruled.

these will do

scuba diver down

swimming in the night light new snow

tuesday notes:
-have you ever taken your wimp dog out for a walk while listening to
"...and justice for all" on headphones? it's hilarious.
-new idea for exposure: art for crock pots
-there must be something in the adolescent brain that determines musical taste for life because all i've listened to the past month with any real enjoyment is firehose, the cure, dinosaur jr. and metallica. it's been great.
-self-doubt, money worries, and sore throats begone!

sneak views

so i am having an art show next month. there will be some new drawings, prints, things, and miscellaneous items to look at. it will be in san francisco. i'm going to have an official announcement flier this week sometime. in the meantime, i'm previewing some of the prints that were made for the show and offer them up for pre-order for people that can't go to the show or live elsewhere. these are all 18x24 silkscreen prints, expertly printed by bloom screen printing in beautiful oakland, california. i'm setting aside handfuls of each of these for those interested. i'll be shipping them out after the show goes up, in mid march when the dust settles. so take a peek, and if you want to pre-order one, check them out in the shoppe

spiritual tourism

just found these photos in a box in the basement. in 1998 chris and i busted down to georgia on spring break and went to athens. on the way back we went to howard finster's paradise garden. he was still alive then and his teenage niece was working the register at the office. we didn't see him, but he was supposed to preach the next day. i recently started looking at a book i have about this guy's paintings and sculptures. he was a man possessed. a truly magical and mystical place. i want to go back!

chuck

the other day the new album by chuck prophet "temple beautiful" was released. i did all the art and package design for it. it's not really a concept album, but it's all about san francisco and the varieties of life and experience found within it. it was a really fun project to work on. i made a collage and did some inky business with it and it came out pretty cool. lots of little bits in there for the san franciscophile to pick out and chomp on.
here's an npr review of the album.

i did a bunch of drawings of characters and places from the songs... they are sprinkled throughout the booklet and inner-sleeve that accompany the cd and lp versions, respectively.
he's currently doing some bus tours of sf for the album. rad idea, really.

even made a tour shirt to go with it.
here's chuck's website and here's the label yep roc
chuck is a really nice dude and he does this stuff because he loves it and means it. you can't really ask for much more than that.
