blog note: i've been slacking hard. one day you look up and a whole week has passed or a whole year or 20 minutes or whatever. i'm trying to make new year resolution to write a little more on here like the old days: more posts about things that i find amazing, people i admire, art books & movies, etcetera infinity. as well as the usual sketchbook doodles, announcements and general expressions of my personal worldview. mission statement! so with that, let me start off 2012 with a post about one of my favorite artists and inspirational figure: Chris Knox.

it seems sort of pointless to do biography or something when there are no shortage of places to get all the information on the internet. for me, i got into his record "songs of you and me album" when a good buddy who worked at a record store hipped me. it sounded weird and really "un-tough", if that makes sense. i think i was listening to a lot of DUDE music. lollapalooza rock. anyway, i got to see him later that year in cincinnati opening for barbara manning and it stands out as one of the most confrontational and punk shows of my life. he was wearing really short shorts (took his pants off onstage, so this was obviously a stage-specific outfit) and played the omnichord, guitar and sang into a headset mic to a bunch of burn outs in a bar/laundromat in ohio. it was mind-blowing. i was right up front, and during one song he put his hand on my head and then started pulling my head towards his crotch. i escaped his grip and was allowed to carry on un-molested. it was great. later on that night he drew me a picture and gave me a guitar string. i was 19 and stoked.

soon after i got found a bunch of tall dwarfs cd's and got equally into those. tall dwarfs was/is his collaboration with alec bathgate (who made one of my favorite records of all time "gold lame." if anyone has this on LP i will trade you with a custom drawing/painting of your choice). listening to these two collaborate by mail on 4-tracks with little experiments and perfect little pop songs was inspirational and made me think that i could possibly write songs and record them. it was a major "punk" moment for me, more so than any so-called punk record ever was.

around that time i also found an old copy of forced exposure with a 20+ interview. (note: you can still get copies of this for $5 at that link. how is that possible? all the images in this post are scanned from that issue) and read all about his visual art. he's been a prolific artist and illustrator for his whole life. now i was really connecting with this guy. he was also an animator and designer. i highly suggest checking out this site that collects all his film and video work, including a couple long interviews HERE.

as my buddy paul said "he's a BIG DEAL in nz... a national treasure!" it's true and he is.

i keep coming back to his music over the past 15 or so years i've been aware of it and it never fails to inspire and mesmerize. in the summer of 2009, chris knox had a stroke and has continues to struggle with various health issues. there's been a number of benefit concerts and a compilation of people covering his songs, which i also suggest you check out here as it directly benefits mr. knox's recovery.

"if you display a bit of humanity you tend to get a human response" pretty much sums up entirely how i approach art and music making and how art and music affect me. i think that's what i've related to all along and what has stuck with me all these years. if you want to do something, there's really no reason you can't.

went to the medical history museum over the weekend. yeah, we know how to party.

it's on the grounds of what used to be central state hospital aka the insane asylum. they've torn down most of it, but some it is still around and empty. i'm sure there are lots of flickr pages if you look of people creeping around.

the museum is still kept up and looks like it did in the old days. this is where the doctors took classes. no texting!

i just put up a a bunch of small-ish drawings (babies) up to my Internet Art Shoppe (trademark 2011). most all of them have appeared in the blog at some point or another, and some of them even travelled around to a different state before coming home. all the drawings are $30. only a couple are framed, like the above one. but it's really not that nice of a frame anyway, so you're not really missing anything.
it's part of what has become an annual cleaning out of the racks and throwing love into the ether (for cash or trade). for the most part, all the new ones up there were done in the span of a couple days, working out some ideas and putting brush to paper. this is the sort of stuff i look back on fondly as it usually possesses some immediacy and honesty that's missing from the more laborious stuff. i'm not sales-pitching you, really, i'm just saying. go get a baby if you want a baby!

when i was in byron bay, i made this drawing. it felt really good and was a small beginning of a new path to wander down. i still love the big black shapes.

hello indianapolis. you are getting stoked for the superbowl coming to town, so you are fixing up the joint.

one of the things you're fixing up is the "general services administration" building from 1974. it's a big cement box, but in is underbelly there's a big rainbow mural that milton glaser did in 1975. finally, the superbowl is having a positive effect on my life!

like i said, mr. glaser did this in 1975 and this proves it. "color fuses". nice one.

before these weird permanent tables and stools were here, there were some cement blocks and ledges. they were really slick and on the tall side and were really fun to skate. however, this is a government building and we would get kicked out within 2 minutes every time. even at one in the morning. i guess in the end they decided to put in these stupid looking things.
also, it would probably feel very strange to walk through that stair tunnel. seems like a good place for a creep to lurk just around the corner.

it surprises and comforts me that somebody still has a job naming paint colors. seems like a robot would have taken that over and it all would be numbers by now. this is "jamaican smile".

while trying to organize the endless boxes of crud in the basement i came along this little artifact of summers' past. it's a letter from julian koster to me when i was living in muncie and trying to book his band to play at the yard sale/art sale (YART SALE) we were putting on. that postmark says march 18, 1999.

pre-email address communications, right here. i met julian very briefly at a neutral milk hotel show in ohio some months before and he was really into the idea a tour that involved playing people's backyards. he did come to muncie, but he ended up playing my buddy chris' parents house in indianapolis. i don't know where i was or why i did not got to that show.

i think i sent him a tape and a letter and being stoked to get a letter back. somewhere there is also a tape of a really funny answering machine message he left for me at my mom's house. people tend to romanticize the pre-internet age sometimes, but you know some things were special in a way that's gone now. let's think on that.

as i readjust to being home and sort through the rubble, i am going to talk about a place and suggest how good skateboarding is for the soul and body.

you know a spot is going to be good when it requires a little woodland hike to get there. paul, pictured here, was kind enough to take me to this spot twice during my time down south.

the drains aka cat-town (get it?). a perfect little downhill number with all the good curves and cracks you'd expect. down towards the bottom, people had arranged brush and branch to make little wave-things that you could tuck under. only in a surf town, right? awesome.

it was one of those places i always wanted to skate when i was a kid but never quite found. i astral projected and let the 14-year-old version of myself inhabit our body and look at it and he was pumped. he was all also really stoked that we had armpit hair now and somehow escaped middle school.

peace and sweetness. dude, you should probably stretch first.

the bro cruise down. paul was on an 80s dogtown ben sherman that weighed about 20 pounds and those big soft wheels that were born to do exactly what it is they are doing.

i did not land this, but it looks cool, right? no one has to know.

amac was there (and he took a lot of these photos and the photos of the art show. what a good dude, he is.) and got some. he had that surf-y style for miles. he also proceeded to embarrass paul and i in a variety of bowls later that day with fearless edge-dawgs and frontside slash babies.

all things must end, but at least some of them end with a nice little walk through some plants.

and no ditch mission is complete without some weird satanic graffiti. thank you paul and amac for sharing the goodness and once again delivering a day that won't be forgotten.

here i am getting schooled by anne leon on mixing inks the aussie way. anne was gracious and generous enough to let me use her amazing print studio and help me burn screens and such. quality peoples.

i flew to australia on tuesday. i skipped wednesday and showed up on a thursday. day one.

the sun sets in texas, creating a romantic scene between a plane and portable hallway

if i was a stewardess: attention ladies and gentlemen, if you look to your left you will notice that we are flying above a bunch of clouds. we are flying above CLOUDS. you know what's underneath those clouds? THE OCEAN. look at what is happening to us right now.

i flew all this way just to see this guy get some and he blew it.

TRUE STORIES
This art show is by two friends who explore similar themes and ideas in their artwork and like the way their drawings look together.We think of these drawings as scenes from a story that are given a title, a framework, and a moment for contemplation and reflection. Many of these drawings were made quickly while the feeling was being felt and in quick succession. These words are little poems and titles and plot devices. We really enjoy showing you these drawings and we hope that you like looking at them.

hello eastern southerners, myself and my good friend mark taylor are showing drawings in durham, north carolina on friday. this is the poster for it.
here's a funny thing: it's at another buddy's gallery and salon called rock, paper, scissors. the last time mark and i worked together was at a gallery called rock, paper, scissors in oakland. the two are unrelated. cosmic!

i made a big batch of small drawings and these are some of them. you may have seen some others in my blog posts from the past week or two. guess who got some black and red sumi ink in japan? me.

we also made a little booklet for the show that will be there on premises. there were grand plans to make an appearance and play music at the opening, but, alas, reality has set in and a trip to NC is not in the cards for myself or mark. we are sending these images as our proxies.

we're in the pages! the goal is to show a whole bunch of drawings and keep it fun, interesting, and inexpensive for people who are looking or taking home some art. i think mark and i's drawing fit together really well. they are funny and deep depending on who's looking at what. or not. there's gonna be well over 100 things to look at. easy peasy!

man, i i used to love this band. i found this video by accident this morning and was reminded of how into guv'ner i was. their guitar player had the raddest and weirdest sounds. i think it was only possible to make those chords between 1985-97.
the year: 1996. the place: susdy malone's in cincinatti. it was a weird bar what was also a laundromat and was the closest place to muncie that had good shows. plus you could get into bars if you were 18 in ohio. still, it was 2.5 hours away. me and some buddies drove over there and it was amazing! you know how rock shows are when you're 20? they are the everything. there was only a couple people there. i felt bad for the band but stoked for us because the band was really nice and played "cameo" when we yelled for it. then they took a picture with us. such sweet summer memories. i miss indie rock, man. that shit was fun.

that's me on the lower right with the dude touching my head. and that's the lady from cat power in the middle there. she opened up the show. i saw her take a shirt out of a dryer right after, too. she stole that shirt, man.
